Obituaries

B.F. Snelson, 77, died at his home at Sweet Owen on Monday night. He was well known in Owenton, having been jailer of the county some years ago. Burial took place on Wednesday afternoon, following a funeral service at Pleasant Ridge Church.

Mary Ann Judy, the widow of R.H. Judy, who died only a few weeks ago, passed away at her home on Sunday morning after a 10-day illness of pneumonia. She was 61 years of age. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J.E. Baird, were held at the house on Monday afternoon, and interment was in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery.

George W. Hudson, 78, one of the county’s well-known and highly-respected citizens, died at his home near New Columbus on Saturday morning after a long illness. He leaves three children — Denver L. Hudson and Mrs. L.W. Jones of this county and Mrs. S.F. Wilson of Garrard County.

Personal

Mr. and Mrs. F. Fullilove returned home Monday after spending the winter in Florida.

Dr. and Mrs. J.F. Rees, who also spent the winter in Florida, are expected home this week. They spent several days at Cumberland College, in Williamsburg, with their son, Alburt, and are visiting relatives in Louisville on their return.

Mr. and Mrs. Willis Johnson and children of Wheatley were guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. Johnson, on Saturday and Sunday.

Second blow-up

Damage from a second blow-up of tornadoes did damage. On Sparta Road from Long Ridge to Sparta, the following were reported: James Samford — house and barn damage; Mrs. Ethel Craigmyle and sons — two barns damaged; Esmond Gronemiar — house roof damage; Danny Whobrey — house damage; Howard Tackett — barn (total); Robert Crowder — barn off foundation; Lulie Burnett — part of barn; vacant tenant house of E.D. Scott — front porch torn away; Lester Cammack — barn damage; and Isa Carver — window in house broken out.

Birth

A son, Benjamin Todd, weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces, was born at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. His parents are Rev. Steve and Patricia Ashley of Lexington. Rev. Ashley is pastor of Salem Baptist Church.

No drugs

Drug dogs came up empty during a surprise search at the Owen County High School last week.

“This is the first time it’s been done that literally no one knew about it except me,” said Mike Garvey, the city police chief.

Appointed

A Williamstown attorney has been named 15th district judge, covering Owen, Grant, and Carroll counties. The appointment came after Gov. Paul Patton made the selection from three names submitted by a nominating committee.

Safety award

Owen County 4-H members Ronna Vandt and Gena Scott received a safety award in the youth category from the Kentucky Rural Safety and Health Council for their seatbelt usage promotion for teenagers.

Great game

Five Kentucky legends took on the Owen County all-stars in an exhibition game to benefit the Owen County High School softball program. Playing for Owen County were 10 former Rebels, including Jamey Scruggs, Jeremy Solomon, Wes Kendall, Delmas Castle, Kyle Patterson, Adam Patterson, Bryan Bond, John Paul Hanson, Josh Smith and Mark Baldwin.
